Hindu boy dies after Muslim classmate stabs him with a knife, Udaipur witnesses protests and prohibitory orders
Case Summary
On August 16 in Udaipur, a knife attack occurred at a government school where a Muslim student stabbed a Hindu classmate, Devraj. The attack, which took place around 10:30 AM in the Surajpol police station area, triggered widespread communal unrest. Devraj hospitalised in Maharana Bhupal (MB) Hospital after the incident, succumbed to his injuries days later. His family and supporters rallied to demand access to him in the hospital. Following the attack, protestors took to the streets, setting vehicles on fire and throwing stones, leading to the closure of markets in areas like Bapu Bazar and Hathipole. The district administration, with police backing, demolished the accused student's house, citing illegal construction on forest land. Section 144 was imposed, banning public gatherings, and internet services were suspended to control the situation. The motive behind the stabbing remains unclear. Both students, around 15 years old, were classmates at Government Senior Secondary School, Bhatiyani Chohatta.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the reported motive of why the Muslim boy stabbed the Hindu victim, who eventually succumbed to the attack, remains unknown. There are strong suspicions that the attack could have been religiously motivated since the incident also escalated to communal tensions in the area between Hindus and Muslims. However, since there is no reported indication of a religious motive to the stabbing, the case is being categorised as undecided. If more information emerges, it will be added to the hate crime database.
