Uttar Pradesh: Tanveer lies and serves chicken biryani in place of veg biryani to 4 Hindu pilgrims returning from Haridwar
Case Summary
On 4th August, chaos erupted at a bus stop in Kandhla, Shamli district, when non-vegetarian biryani was served to Hindu pilgrims returning to Delhi from Haridwar after collecting Gangajal. Four youths from Delhi, who had stopped to eat, noticed a sign for "veg biryani" on a cart. After confirming with the seller, Tanveer, they ordered the biryani. However, one of them grew suspicious and insisted on checking the biryani, leading to an altercation when they discovered chicken pieces in the dish. The upset Hindu youths, led by Anuj Tyagi, called the police emergency number 112, demanding action. The authorities quickly responded, arriving at the scene to calm the situation. Tanveer was apprehended and taken to the police station, and his cart was closed and parked at his shop. Devendra Sharma, the police station in-charge, confirmed that Anuj Tyagi had reported the incident, leading to Tanveer's arrest.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under the prime category 'Attack on Hindu religious symbols' of the tracker because of the various distinct components that demonstrate the perpetrator's bias against the Hindu faith. Further, under this prime category, the sub-category selected is- Defiling religious customs- Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. There are several such customs and traditions that are followed by various Hindus and Hindu sects. Defiling of these traditions and customs is a breach of an individual or group’s religious practices. Such practices can range from dietary restrictions like not eating non-vegetarian food for a certain period of the year, not eating non-vegetarian food at all, not eating beef since the cow is considered holy in Hinduism, the sanctity of religious customs followed in the house (like many ISCKON devotees), etc. Any malicious action leading to the breach of such traditions or defilement of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the religion itself but also from disregard for the faith of the devotees who follow the customs/traditions and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific sect of Hindus, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. Here, a Muslim shopkeeper deceived four Hindu pilgrims returning from Haridwar by serving them chicken biryani instead of the vegetarian biryani they had requested. This act is particularly offensive given the religious dietary practices of many Hindus, who avoid consuming meat for spiritual reasons. Such a deceitful act not only violates the trust of the customers but also disrespects their religious beliefs and practices, leading to feelings of betrayal and insult among the Hindu pilgrims. Such acts are indicative of deep-seated animosity towards the religious practices and beliefs of Hindus. Deliberately serving non-vegetarian food to individuals who follow a vegetarian diet for religious reasons is a blatant show of disrespect and an attack on their faith. This kind of behaviour reflects an underlying hostility and disregard for the sanctity of Hindu beliefs and traditions. It demonstrates the inherent Hindumisia that radical Muslims harbour inside them. For this reason, this case qualifies for inclusion in the hate tracker database.
