Good Shepherd English Medium School in Damoh records religion of Hindu students as Christianity
Case Summary
In Madhya Pradesh, the Good Shepherd English Medium School in Damoh altered the religious identity of two Hindu female students on their transfer certificates (TCs), listing them as Christians instead of Hindus. This has caused issues for the students in obtaining admission to new schools. The students' parents lodged a formal complaint with the Madhya Pradesh State Child Rights Protection Commission. The commission took immediate action, directing the District Magistrate to investigate. The complaint was filed by Ravi Shankar from Varanasi, who stated that his daughters' religion had been incorrectly changed despite their Hindu background and possession of a Scheduled Caste certificate. The Commission expressed concerns about possible covert religious conversions by the school.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong suspicion that the mischaracterization of the children's religious identity was an attempt to subtly groom them into conversion. The NCPCR expressed apprehensions as well. However, it is also possible that the transfer certificates of the two students had clerical errors and the mischaracterization of religion was not a deliberate attempt. This case is therefore being added as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
