Case Summary

On July 28, 2024, Maharashtra Police booked Mohammed Galib Sheikh and Talib Sheikh for harassing, threatening, and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Mumbai's Penkarpada area. The minor girl, originally from Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgadh district, had gone missing from her village on July 22. Her family later learned she had committed suicide on July 25 and was last seen with Galib in Mumbai. According to the FIR filed at Kashmira Police Station, Galib had been following and harassing the girl, demanding she leave school and marry him. Despite previous threats and a complaint filed by the girl's mother at Nizamabad Police Station, the harassment continued. On July 22, the girl went missing, and it was later discovered that Galib had abducted her and brought her to Mumbai, where she was sexually assaulted. The girl's mother believes that the continuous harassment by Galib and his brother Talib forced her daughter to commit suicide. Police charged both men under sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita, 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

In other cases, it has also been observed that the Muslim perpetrators target Hindu girls specifically owing to their animosity against the religious identity of the victim.
