5 girls disappear in less than 2 months, Rs 15,000 reward declared on main accused Akram
Case Summary
In Jalaun district, Uttar Pradesh, five Hindu girls went missing over the course of one and a half months, sparking concerns over love jihad. Muslim youths were reportedly involved in these disappearances, leading to widespread protests by Hindu organizations. The organizations demanded immediate action from the authorities and even threatened to go on a hunger strike if the girls were not found. The situation escalated when a girl from the Kotwali area, who was scheduled to marry on 14th July, disappeared on 3rd July. Her brother reported her missing to the Jalaun police. Tragically, her father passed away on 13th July, adding to the family's distress. Despite efforts by the authorities, including a silent procession by Hindu leaders and the submission of a memorandum to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the girl remained missing. The main suspect, Akram, was declared wanted, and four police teams were deployed to find him. A reward of Rs 15,000 was announced for his capture, and the authorities assured that those involved in religious conversions would face severe consequences, including bulldozer action.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
There were suspicions expressed that the main accused Akram was targeting Hindu women specifically based on their religious identity and therefore, the 5 Hindu girls missing were a result of a religiously motivated hate crime. However, there is no police statement on record to corroborate the suspicions. The family of the victims have also not spoken out, talking about the possible religious angle in the case. Later, there were accusations by the mother of the girl who went missing before her wedding that the police had taken money from the accused. This case is therefore being categorised as undecided. If more information emerges, it will be added to the hate crime database.
