Maulvi Mujeeb Sheikh beats Hindu children with a stick, strangulates one for plucking jamun from a tree in Dargah
Case Summary
In Beed district, Maharashtra, a Maulvi and his accomplice were booked for brutally assaulting minor Hindu students who were plucking Jamun fruits near a Dargah in Dindrud on July 8. The victims, 13-year-old Tejas Navnath Katare and Ratneshwar Rustum Thombare, were attacked with a stick by Maulvi Mujeeb Mujjid Sheikh and Sameer Attar Kasam. Tejas suffered severe head injuries and was nearly strangled, leading to his hospitalisation in critical condition, while Ratneshwar sustained minor injuries. Tejas' mother, Vandana Katare, filed a police complaint, resulting in the arrest of the Maulvi and a search for the other accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the stated and reported motivation of the crime seems non-religious - which is the stealing of fruits next to the Dargah. However, the brutality with which the Hindu children were assaulted by the Maulvi leads to suspicions that the religious animosity that the Maulvi harboured against the children led to him using brutal force against the Hindu victims for a petty reason. However, since there is no explicit indication of religious hate, it is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more information surfaces, the case will be added to the hate crime database.
