Case Summary
In Karnataka’s Kalaburgi, a Hindu youth named Bhima Sankar was brutally assaulted by several Muslim youths for dancing to a Ram Mandir song during his friend's wedding procession. The incident occurred on July 1 in Itga village under the Gulbarga University Police Station jurisdiction. The conflict began when the victim danced to the song “Agar Chhua To Mandir ko, Teri Aukhat Dikha Denge” played over a DJ system. The following morning, a group of five or six Muslim youths, identified as Khanpasha, Khajapasha, Mashak Patel, Feroze, Kashim, Madar, and Naeem, broke into Bhima Sankar’s house and attacked him. The victim’s family reported feeling terrified and fearing for their lives after the assault. A case was registered based on a complaint lodged by Bhima Sankar’s mother, and an investigation is underway.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. In this case, the Muslim men took offence to a Hindu youth dancing to a song on the Ram Mandir during a wedding function. Merely the song on Ram Mandir triggered the group of Muslim men, who then launched an attack on the Hindu youth. Such attacks are a form of symbolic aggression against the Hindu community that stems from an innate hatred for Hinduism. Given that the fundamental motivation behind these actions is contempt for Hindus and their religion, this instance has been added to the tracker under the following category.
