Why it is Hate Crime ?
In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. In this case, a Muslim boy was recording a video of a Hindu girl without her permission. When Hindus took offence and protested against the same, a Muslim mob gathered outside Hindu homes and attacked them with bricks and stones. The Muslim mob, armed with bricks and stones, specifically gathered the Hindu homes to intimidate the Hindus who were protesting against the harassment of a Hindu girl by a Muslim boy. By attacking the Hindu houses, the Muslim mob was essentially attempting to save the perpetrator owing to his religious identity. Had the intention not been religiously in nature, ideally, the local Muslims should have joined the Hindus in opposing the harassment of a girl by the perpetrator. The only reason that the Muslim mob attacked the Hindus was because the perpetrator was a Muslim and they viewed the Hindu protest as a religious conflict. The attack itself stemmed from religious hostility where the girl's harassment was irrelevant to the local Muslims because she was a Hindu and the local Hindus who protested were attacked because they opposed the harassment by their co-religionist. For that reason, this case is being adde to the hate crime database.
