Why it is Hate Crime ?

In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. In this particular case, there is a strong suspicion that the Hindus victims were attacked specifically owing to the Muslim group's propensity towards religious supremacy. Muslims often harbour a sense of transnational identity where they find identity-based and national resonance with Muslims - regardless of country borders - rather than their non-Muslim fellow countrymen. The Islamic Ummah essentially means that the Muslim community is one nation, regardless of Muslims living in different nations. In this case, the India had beat Pakistan in the first stage itself and went on to win the T20 world cup. There is a strong suspicion that the Muslims attacked the Hindus angered by them celebrating India's victory after the Indian team defeated Pakistan - the cricket team of an Islamic nation. It is important to understand that the transnational identity of Muslims would compel them to attack any non-Muslim group, not just Hindus. In this case, however, there is no further information and/or indication to prove that the transnational identity of the Muslims was a driving force behind the attack. It is therefore being categorised as undecided. It will be added to the hate crime database if more information emerges.
