Hindu professor assaulted by Muslim wife after he discovers documents revealing her conversion

Case Summary
Amarendra Tripathi, an assistant professor at Allahabad University, was decieved by his wife, Pratibha Tiwari, who had previously converted to Islam and was married to a Muslim man, Mahroof Hasan, under the name Mehnaz Hasan. Pratibha’s family concealed her past, and arranged her marriage to Amarendra in 2011. They now have two children, but Amarendra recently discovered documents revealing her conversion and previous marriage, turning his life into turmoil. Amarendra lodged a police complaint against Pratibha, her parents, and her sister, accusing them of deception and harassment. Pratibha often fought with his in-laws, threatened suicide, and attempted to tarnish Amarendra's and his family's reputation by spreading offensive content on social media. She recorded their videos with the help of female students and university colleagues and made it viral on social media. She even uploaded his photograph with another associate professor online. She falsely accused him of dowry torture and other allegations, and also broke his nose. In 2012, Pratibha attempted suicide by severing her wrist vein in protest after it was discovered that she ate gutka. She regularly assaulted Amarendra and his mother. She also threw him out of their house on Clive Road on May 23, and he has been living separately since.

In such cases, the relationship is consensual in most cases and the religion of both partners is known to the other. Often, in such cases, there is no direct force/pressure to convert either, however, the attack is a result of the Hindu man being in a relationship with the non-Hindu partner and not following her religion/following Hinduism specifically. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. In this case, though the victim was not forced to convert to Islam by his wife, he was tricked into the marriage by her, as she hid her religion from him. Thereafter, when the accused's true identity was revealed upon him, the former assaulted and harassed him. This case has been added to the tracker because the accused engaged in deliberate deception to marry the Hindu man by hiding her true religious identity. This act of deceit itself is a form of manipulation rooted in religious bias, aimed at undermining the victim's ability to make an informed decision about his relationship and religious life, and this is why this case qualifies to be added in the tracker.
