Case Summary
Ahaber Hussain, posing as Aman Dixit, was arrested in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, for marrying a Hindu woman under false pretences and forcibly converting her to Islam. The victim, originally from Kolkata and a mother of a 7-year-old girl, lodged a complaint on July 1, for gang rape and false marriage. A paediatrician running Baby Care Hospital in Deoband, Ahaber, had deceived several women similarly. After marrying the victim according to Hindu customs, he confined her, monitored her via CCTV, and withheld food. His first wife, Fauzia, also accused him of severe mistreatment. Ahaber, who had been married five times, was previously jailed but used his influence to escape punishment. The victim, supported by a Hindu organization, and Ahaber’s first wife united against him. Despite his past ability to evade justice, Ahaber was finally apprehended by the police.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Distinct elements in this particular case demonstrate that the crime was committed while harbouring a bias against the Hindu faith. What gives this case a distinct religious angle is that the Muslim perpetrator actively hid his religion and pretended to be a Hindu to ensnare the Hindu woman. He deceived the Hindu girl and married her as per Hindu rituals. Further, the details of the case reveal that the victim was not the only target of the Muslim perpetrator but he had previously also singled out many Hindu women and targeted them. The religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the perpetrator intentionally targeted only Hindu women. This stems from the perpetrators's bias for the Hindu faith, which is why this case has been documented as a hate crime.
