Bihar: Hindu family attacked, car damaged during Muharram procession
Case Summary
On 14th July, a Hindu family was attacked during a Muharram procession near Sardarganj Chowk in Dalsinghsarai, Bihar. The family, consisting of Amitesh Kumar, his wife Sadhna Kumari, and their son, was driving through Nawada Sardarganj Chowk when Islamists from the procession attacked their car with swords, shattering the glass and injuring their son. Amitesh stated that the attack was unprovoked, as they were not obstructing the procession. He recognized some of the attackers and insisted that their actions were deliberate. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vivek Kumar Sharma explained that the altercation between two local Islamist groups escalated while they were playing Tajia, leading to the attack on Amitesh's car. The mob also damaged other vehicles in the vicinity. An FIR was registered and an investigation was initiated in the case.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the Hindu victims stated that the attack by the Muslims in the Muharram procession was deliberate and when the culprits were caught, the reason for the attack would be apparent. It is suspected that the victims were hinting at them being targeted specifically because they were Hindus. But since the indication was not clearer, it is being categorised as undecided. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
