Case Summary

A disturbing video from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, shows a 15-year-old boy being forcibly detained, brutally beaten, and humiliated in Batraul village, Motipur town. The Muslim attackers forced the teen to chant "Miyan Saheb Zindabad" and "Allah-Hu-Akbar" and lick spit off the feet of his tormentor. The video, which caused significant tension in the village, led to the administration imposing Section 144 to maintain order. Police arrested three individuals: Mohammed Munna, Sahil, and one other, while one suspect remains at large. The attackers recorded and posted the video on social media. The victim sustained a fractured arm due to the beating. Rajan Kumar, the station-in-charge of Motipur Police Station, confirmed the arrest and registration of a case based on the victim's father's complaint.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. In this case, the immediate trigger of the violence appears to be unknown, however, regardless of the immediate trigger, this qualifies as a hate crime because the Hindu victim was made to chant "Allah-Hu-Akbar". When a Hindu victim is made to chant the Islamic shahada or salutation, it is an attempt to humiliate the victim for his religious identity and disenfranchise him from his faith. It is also a marker of how the perpetrator held scriptural and doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and those who profess the faith.
