Severed calf's head found in Chhattisgarh's Durg, Hindu organisations protest
Case Summary
In the Gaya Nagar area of Durg district, Chhattisgarh, tensions arose after a severed calf's head was discovered on June 23. Hindu rights groups, including Hindu Yuva Manch and Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, staged a protest at the collectorate, starting from Indira Market and marching to the DM office. Hindu groups stated that Muslims were behind the calf's slaughter, prompting police to use lathi-charge to disperse the protestors. The police clarified that a dog had brought the head of a dead calf, which was found near a water tank in Gaya Nagar. The police seized the head and managed the protest. Bhilai SSP Sukhnandan Rathore mentioned that an investigation based on CCTV footage is ongoing, and the calf's head has been sent for laboratory testing. If proven, action will be taken under the Animal Cruelty Act.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
