Case Summary

In Nandwan village of Jodhpur district, Rajasthan, a violent clash erupted when Muslims attacked Hindus hoisting Lord Ram's flag in preparation for the Pran Pratishtha of Shri Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22. The incident prompted the deployment of an RAC battalion to restore law and order. According to Dhanaram Prajapat, who filed a complaint, he and his companions were placing Ram's flags at the Salawas cowshed and around the village on Saturday afternoon when the conflict occurred. Muslim residents, including Mubarak Khan, Alaau Khan, Safi Khan, Latif Khan, and others, blocked their way and attacked them, leading to sloganeering from both sides.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

As per case specifics, it has been placed under the sub-category- 'Attacked for Hindu identity', under the prime category- 'Attack not resulting in death' of the hate tracker. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. Here, the Hindus were assaulted for celebrating the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. For Hindus, the Pran Pratishtha event represents the pinnacle of centuries-long struggles to reclaim Lord Ram’s birthplace and reinstate Bhagwan Ram to his Janmabhoomi. The return of Lord Ram to Ram Janmabhoomi is a testament to the thousands of devotees, particularly the Karsevaks, who gave up everything to continue battling for a site that was forcibly taken by Islamic fundamentalists who humiliated the native Hindus by erecting a mosque on top of an already existing temple. However, some Muslim youths, owing to their animosity towards Hindus and their religious places; especially the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya which has special spiritual, cultural and religious significance, launched unbridled attacks against Hindu devotees celebrating the Ram Mandir Pran Prathishtha event. Attacks, like this one, are symbolically seen as an attack on the broader Hindu community and are rooted in religious bias or hatred against Hindus and for this reason, this case has been included in the tracker.
