Case Summary

In Bihar's Kaimur district, Shafiq Ansari, a Muslim youth, killed his Hindu girlfriend. The victim, a 17-year-old high school student, had travelled to her cousin's home in Rohtas for exams. Shafiq lured her to his rented accommodation in Sasaram before leading her to the hill where he committed the murder. Shafiq slit her throat and pushed her body from Manjhar Kund hill in Rohtas district, and her body was discovered 20 days later. Shafiq confessed to the police, citing frustration over the girl's recent silence as his motive. Family members reported her missing when she failed to return home, prompting a police investigation. Police arrested Shafiq, who admitted to the crime during interrogation. They recovered the body, clothing, and the murder weapon.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, the immediate cause of the crime appears to be non-religious, that is, disagreement on the use of social media. However, the extreme violence inflicted on the Hindu victim, resulting in her death, raises serious concerns about possible premeditation and deeper religious motives behind the attack. There has been a pattern of Hindu women being selectively targeted by Muslim men for the underlying purposes of religious conversion and sexual exploitation. On many occasions, when Hindu women refuse to comply with the demands of the Muslim perpetrator, they are killed. The disproportionate brutality suggests that the Muslim perpetrator may have harboured deep-seated animosity towards the victim, potentially driven by religious bias or hatred. Such excessive violence in response to a minor disagreement often reflects underlying religious tensions. However, as there are currently no explicit indicators of religious motivation in this case, nor has the police or the victim's family suggested such a motive, therefore, the case remains classified as ‘Undecided’ in the database. If further evidence emerges confirming that the murder was religiously motivated, the case will be reclassified accordingly within the hate crime database.
