Hindu labourer shot dead by Islamic terrorists in Kashmir
Case Summary
On April 17, 2024, a Hindu migrant labourer from Bihar, Raju Shah, was shot dead by terrorists in Bijbehara, Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. This incident occurred in the evening when terrorists opened fire at him at point-blank range in Jablipora, where he lived with his family. Critically injured, he was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries, having been hit by two bullets — one in the neck and another in the abdomen. This attack marks the second targeted killing within ten days, following an attack on cab driver Pramjit Singh from Delhi on April 8. The area was cordoned off and a search operation commenced. A BJP spokesperson for J&K, Altaf Thakur, condemned the attack as an act of "frustration of adversaries" and urged the police to track down and sternly punish the killers.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is being added to the primary category 'Attack resulting in death' under the secondary category 'Attacked for Hindu identity'. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. In this case, Islamic terrorists shot and killed a Hindu migrant labourer in Kashmir in a targeted killing. Islamic terrorists of Kashmir have had a long history of targeting Hindus specifically. In the 1990s, Kashmiri Muslims along with Islamic terrorists committed an ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits in the valley with thousands killed and many more who had to flee the state. The Islamic terrorists had given Hindus three options - to either convert to Islam, die or flee the state. The purpose of the terrorism in Kashmir has been to establish an Islamic state, separate from the rest of India. The secessionism seen in Kashmir is deeply intertwined with religious terrorism aimed at Hindus and other non-Muslims. The targeted killing of Hindu migrant labourers is an extension of religious animosity, where non-Muslims are killed with impunity in order to establish Kashmir as an Islamic state. These targeted attacks against Hindu labourers are driven from religious hostility and terrorism. As such, it is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
