Case Summary

In Madhya Pradesh, over 53 mutilated cow remains were discovered in three locations, causing distress among the Hindu community. The remains were dumped into the sacred Wainganga River. Upon receiving reports, local police, along with a veterinary doctor, examined and buried the carcasses. The gruesome find included 19 cow carcasses in the Wainganga River near Pindari in the Seoni district and 32 more in another area. Many cows had severed heads and limbs, with parts scattered in the forest. Local villagers aided in retrieving and burying the remains, speculating that the remains might have been carried by the river. Some believe the disposal was a result of recent crackdowns on slaughterhouses to evade police action. A local Hindu activist suggested the incident was an intentional act by the Muslim community to offend Hindus, linking it to the recent Bakrid observance. He called for a CBI inquiry and severe actions against the culprits, warning of massive protests if demands were not met. Superintendent of Police Rakesh Sinha assured the public that the investigation is examining all angles to identify and arrest those responsible. Efforts to retrieve all carcasses from the river are ongoing despite the challenges posed by recent rains.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
