Muslim woman pressurises Dalit husband to convert; gets their son circumcised, converts him to Islam
Case Summary
In Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Dalit youth Rajkumar Jhanjhot married a Muslim woman, Rani Beg, in 2006. They had a son in 2007. Rajkumar supported Rani's education, enabling her to secure a job in the MP Police. However, after Rani got the job, she distanced herself from Rajkumar, forced him to sign over his property, and expelled him from their home. She later married a Muslim man, Mohammad Tariq, without divorcing Rajkumar, and had their son circumcised and converted to Islam in 2020. Rajkumar sought justice from senior police officers but has not been heard. During a public hearing at the Collector's office, he revealed these issues, including Rani's pressure on him to convert his religion. He discovered his son's conversion during Ramadan. Rani Beg accused Rajkumar of being of a criminal nature and hiding a previous marriage. She filed a dowry harassment case against him in 2018, which was still in court. The Ujjain Collector, Neeraj Kumar Singh, confirmed the complaint and stated that both parties have since separated.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Distinct elements in this particular case demonstrate that the crime was committed while harbouring a bias against the Hindu faith. As per case details, the prime category under which this case has been placed in the hate tracker is 'Men attacked for being associated with non-Hindu women'. To break it down further, we have chosen one sub-category under this prime category. The sub-category relevant in this case is, 'Forced to convert after marriage', under which one tertiary category namely, 'Forced circumcision' has been selected. In such cases, a non-Hindu woman marries a Hindu man and the force/pressure against the Hindu man to convert to Islam begins after marriage. In such cases, the marriage is consensual in most cases and often, there is no element of the non-Hindu woman hiding her religious identity. The marriage could be under the Special Marriages Act where neither parties are required to convert their religion for the marriage to be considered legitimate. While the victim in such cases enters matrimony assuming that religious identity is not a barrier, the non-Hindu woman starts to pressure the Hindu man to convert to Islam after marriage. In such cases, there is application of force/pressure by the perpetrator, including, denial of the man’s religious rights. Some of the means by which the man is forced/pressured to convert include forcing/pressurizing the man to involuntarily consume beef, pressurizing/forcing to read the Kalma, forced circumcision, forced to go to the mosque, etc. There are several instances where after marriage, the man voluntarily converts to Islam. Such cases are often argued to be a result of religious brainwashing, however, for the purpose of documenting religiously motivated hate crimes, in the absence of the victim complaining of forced conversion, such cases do not form a part of the database. In this instance, the relationship was consensual and the man and woman were with each other knowing each other’s identity fully well. However, the Muslim woman started pressuring her Hindu husband to renounce his faith and adopt Islam. She also circumcised the child she had with the Hindu man and converted him to Islam without the husband's knowledge. The underlying motivation of predatory proselytisation itself is animosity towards the professed faith of the victim. In this case, there was intimidation involved in the pressure exerted to forcefully convert the Hindu man. Since the central motivation is religion, this case has been added as a hate crime.
