Bus conductor Tauseef poses as Suresh to trap Hindu girl, converts and marries her
Case Summary
In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a case emerged when a bus conductor deceived a woman by hiding his religious identity. The woman, a computer operator from a middle-class family, met the conductor, who introduced himself as Suresh, during her daily commute. They began conversing, and she fell in love with him. The conductor took her to his acquaintance's house in Juhapur, where he changed her name, married her, and started living with her. She eventually became pregnant. Later, the woman discovered that the man was actually named Tauseef, not Suresh. She also got to know that he was already married with children. Devastated, she attempted to commit suicide at the riverfront but was saved in time. She then lodged a complaint with the police. The police registered a case based on her complaint and took Tauseef into custody, starting an investigation.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there are two distinct components which prove that the offence was committed coupled with a religious bias. As per case details, the core category under which this case has been listed is 'Hate crime against women in relationships'. Under this category, the sub-category relevant here is, 'Man pretends to be Hindu' When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this instance, the Muslim man hid his religious identity to befriend the Hindu woman. He also hid the fact that he was previously married with children. The youth changed the Hindu victim's name and married her. The girl only realised that she was cheated when she became pregnant with the Muslim man's child. The fact, that the Muslim youth hid his religious identity to trap the Hindu woman is a clear manifestation of his bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion which is why this case has been included in the tracker.
