Over 600 cows slaughtered, meat distributed in 50 villages
Case Summary
In Alwar, Rajasthan, a shocking revelation exposed an operational beef market allegedly supported by local police officers. On February 19, the Rajasthan government, led by BJP's Bhajan Lal Sharma, responded swiftly by reassigning the implicated police station and suspending four officers. Authorities also demolished the facilities used for the illegal trade. This disturbing scenario was uncovered by Dainik Bhaskar journalists Rajkumar Jain and Radheshyam, whose investigative reporting revealed that around 600 cows were slaughtered monthly. The market had a sophisticated distribution system, using a WhatsApp group to facilitate deliveries to over 50 villages and supply around 300 shops. Despite prior knowledge, local police took no action until the expose prompted a response. IG Umesh Chandra Datt of the Jaipur Range led raids, confirming the distressing activities. The culprits fled, abandoning their vehicles and the remains of numerous cows. This incident highlighted the brutal treatment of animals and raised serious concerns about law enforcement oversight.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. Those who work towards the protection of the cow are also often attacked brutally by Muslim radicals. In all cases of cow slaughter and/or attack against those who work towards the protection of the cow, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
