Shabbir poses as Raju, establishes sexual relations with a Hindu woman of Gwalior, assaults and tries to kill her when she refuses to convert to Islam

Case Summary
In the Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh, Mohammed Shabbir pretended to be Raju Kumar, befriended a Hindu girl and established sexual relations with her. The Hindu woman was already married and staying separated from her husband. The woman filed a police complaint after she discovered that the man who had forcefully established sexual relations with her was actually a Muslim. She said that the accused lied to her saying that his name was Raju. On confrontation, however, he accepted his identity. The woman in the complaint said that the accused pressured her to convert to Islam and then abused and assaulted her for refusing to do so. She further said that the accused tried to kill her. This had been happening for 4-5 years. The police took cognisance of the event and arrested the accused for raping and torturing a Hindu woman.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there are two distinct components which prove that the offence was committed coupled with a religious bias. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. Further, he assaulted and inflicted torture on her for refusing to accede to his demands of conversion. The fact that the Hindu woman was trapped with the sole aim of conversion, makes this case worthy of being documented under this category.
