Muslim man of Bareilly poses as Rana to trap a Hindu girl, forcibly converts her, feeds her beef during Nikah

Case Summary
In Uttar Pradesh, a young Muslim man trapped a Hindu girl from Bihar by lying about his identity, started a romantic relationship with her and then brought her to Bareilly’s Dargah-e-Aala Hazrat. She was converted to Islam there and fed beef during their Nikah. She was forced into abortion, assaulted and kicked out of the house when she conceived his baby. The incident took place in Sunni Nagar, within the jurisdiction of the Baheri police station. The accused initially introduced himself as "Rana" while working with the victim in Gurgaon. He initiated a romantic relationship with her and later revealed his true religious identity. After convincing her to move in with him in Baheri, he coerced her into converting to Islam and marrying him at a dargah. However, after the marriage, she faced physical abuse and was forced to undergo an abortion. She was also raped by the accused's brother. When she reported the rape to her husband, he threatened to pour petrol and burn her alive if she revealed anything to anyone. Despite seeking help from the police, she stated that they dismissed her complaints, prompting her to escalate the matter to the SSP.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The distinct element in this particular case that demonstrates that the Muslim perpetrator committed the crime while harbouring a bias against the Hindu faith is that he pretended to be a Hindu to deceive the victim. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. Further, the Muslim accused employed intimidatory tactics like forcing the victim to read the Quran, go to the mosque and force-feeding the Hindu victim beef to convert her to Islam. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. A distinct element in this regard is also the rape and sexual assault of the victim by the perpetrator's brother. After the woman complained of that rape to her husband by his brother, he threatened to burn her alive. In such cases, it is often seen that Hindu victim are treated as sub-human entities and merely objects owing to their religious identity, even after they are converted forcefully. Along with the other elements, this element makes this crime a particularly heinous hate crime. Additionally, violence was also employed to coerce the victim to abandon her faith and accept Islam. The underlying motivation of the crime was the animosity towards the professed faith of the victim. In this case, the perpetrator hid his religion to specifically target a Hindu woman. Then used violence to pressure her to convert to Islam. Since the central motivation was religion, this case has been added as a hate crime.
