Irfan, Arbaaz among 7 arrested for blackmailing and gang-raping a Class 11 student in Ajmer; ran a gang to trap Hindu girls

Case Summary
In Rajasthan’s Ajmer district, a Hindu girl studying in Class 11 was lured into one Irfan's trap via Instagram. Irfan and his accomplices gang-raped her and began harassing her by threatening to make the video viral. The accused also extorted Rs 5 lakh from the girl and later demanded Rs 10 lakh. The police registered a case following the victim’s father’s complaint. The victim’s father reported to the police that his daughter befriended a girl at a coaching center in October 2023. This friend encouraged the victim to connect with Irfan on Instagram. Initially, the victim blocked Irfan, but her friend convinced her to accept his request. Subsequently, the victim's Instagram account password was stolen and misused. She was blackmailed with obscene chats made from her account and pressured into a physical relationship. The accused clicked obscene pictures of the victim and used them to keep extorting money. The primary accused, Irfan, his friends Arbaaz, Aslam, Razzaq, Mubarak Khan and Imran Khan, and one minor were arrested. Investigation revealed that the accused ran a gang together that targeted Hindu girls. The gang was in contact with many other girls through social media.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Since the victim in this case is a minor, there is a strong suspicion of grooming involved. Grooming is a phenomenon where Muslim men specifically target minor non-Muslim girls for sexual exploitation, abuse and rape. However, since there is no specific evidence of a pattern of victimization of Hindu minors by the perpetrator and no indication from the parents of the minor that she was targeted for her religious identity, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'.
