Case Summary

In Ahmedabad, a woman named Mehzabin Mohsin pressurised her Hindu boyfriend, Rakesh Brahmbhatt to convert to Islam. After he ended their relationship, she and her friend threw acid on him. The attack, which occurred on January 27, left Rakesh with serious burn injuries on his right eye, back, and private parts. He was hospitalised at GCS Hospital. The incident happened while Rakesh was on duty at the Amdavad Municipal Transport Service Control Cabin near Kalupur railway station. Rakesh, a 51-year-old AMTS controller, had ended his four-year relationship with Mehzabin after his family discovered the affair. Upset by the breakup, Mehzabin carried out the acid attack, asking Rakesh, "Why don’t you have a relationship with me?" before throwing a bucket of acid on him. The police registered a case under Sections 326(A), 333, and 114 of the IPC and are searching for Mehzabin and her friend. Rakesh also said that Mehzabin was pressuring him to convert to Islam.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

When Hindu men are in a relationship with non-Hindu women, there are cases where the Hindu man faces assault after he refuses to convert and change his religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu woman or her family. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu woman known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu woman or her family starts forcing/pressurizing the Hindu man to convert to Islam and upon his refusal, assaults the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu man converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the man was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam.
