Saif Ali arrested for posing as Sukhwinder to entrap Hindu girl, books hotel room in Haldwani using fake ID

Case Summary
On May 26, Haldwani Police arrested Saif Ali for assuming the identity of a Hindu man named Sukhwinder Singh to trap a Hindu girl in a relationship. The accused had booked a room in Avan Hotel using a fake ID card. After getting information from Hindu activist groups, the Police caught Saif and the Hindu girl at the private hotel near the Railway Station in the Lalkuan Nagar area. The accused is a resident of Lalpur of the Kichha Kotwali area of Udham Singh Nagar district. Saif Ali, a Muslim man, had lured the Hindu girl who was from the Dineshpur area by pretending to be Hindu and had taken her to Lalkuan on a Bullet motorcycle. Upon discovering his true identity during police interrogation, the girl's family took her away without filing a complaint. However, a case was registered against Saif Ali, and his motorcycle was seized. Hindu activist Kamal Muni Joshi reported that local Hindu leaders had informed the police about the incident, suspecting Ali might be part of a larger racket. The police arrested Ali and are investigating further based on their findings.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong suspicion that the Muslim perpetrator lured the Hindu girl by changing his religious identity and pretending to be a Hindu, as alleged by Hindu groups. The suspicion only gains credence because the family of the girl took their daughter and left after Hindu groups intervened. However, for a case to be categorised as a hate crime, the individual or organisation making the allegation of a religious motive has to have appropriate agency in the case. It is understandable in such circumstances that the family of the girl may not want to take up the matter legally and would want to keep it under wraps, which would explain why the father simply left with the girl without making statements and/or approaching the police. Since there is no allegation of the religious motivations to the crime from any quarter that has agency on the woman in question, in the absence of a statement from the family, this case is being classified as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
