Zafar, Jibril, Ahmed and Akhtar sentenced to life imprisonment for gang-raping a minor Hindu girl on a school’s roof
Case Summary
On May 21, 2024, the Madhubani district court in Bihar sentenced four individuals, namely, Mohammad Zafar Ansari, Mohammad Jibril, Mohammad Ahmed and Akhtar Ansar, to life imprisonment for gang-raping a minor Hindu girl. On September 5, 2022, the 16-year-old victim had gone with her brother to visit a fair in Kasera village. After some time, the girl went to a school near the fair venue for defecation. There, the four perpetrators caught hold of the victim, forcibly took her to the roof of the school building, and took turns to gang-rape her. Hearing the victim’s cries for help, people began gathering nearby. All the culprits fled from the crime scene. However, passersby caught hold of Zafar Ansari and handed him over to the Police. The police then raided and arrested the remaining three culprits. The next day, on September 6, 2022, the victim’s mother filed a complaint in the police station. During the case proceedings, Advocate Ajay Jha Yash stated that the victim’s elder sister was also gang-raped by them.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the perpetrators who were later imprisoned for life targeted the minor Hindu girl and it was later found that they targeted the elder sister as well. There is sufficient precedence to speculate that religious animosity and hate led to this level of brutality and victimisation of the Hindu victims. However, in the absence of concrete indications of a religious motive, this case is being categorised as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, this case would added to the hate crime database.
