Faizal alias Badshah arrested for taking Hindu girl to Kozhikode in the pretext of marriage, then forcing her to convert and read Kalma
Case Summary
In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, a case involving grooming and an attempted forced conversion emerged. A Hindu girl from the Yadav community was abducted by Faizal alias Badshah, who promised marriage but then pressured her to convert to Islam. The police rescued the girl on May 18 and arrested the accused. The accused, Faizal alias Badshah, a resident of Anna Nagar, took the victim to Kerala on May 11. There, he pressured her to convert to Islam. The girl eventually contacted her family. The girl's family filed a missing person report at the Avadhpuri police station, claiming that a Muslim man had taken their daughter under false pretences and tried to convert her. The police registered a case under the Freedom of Religion Act. Learning of the complaint, Faizal sent her back to Bhopal, where she reported to the police. Police suspect this case may involve love jihad or human trafficking. Documents related to Islam, including a book titled “How to Become a Muslim” and papers on reciting Kalma, were found in the victim’s possession.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This particular case has been classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under the core category of 'Hate Crimes against women in relationship' because there is a distinct component in this case, which essentially involves 'Forced conversion before marriage'. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. In this case, the Muslim perpetrator trapped the Hindu girl by promising her marriage and after she fell into his trap, the accused started exerting pressure on her to convert to Islam. Since the details of the case demonstrate the perpetrator's bias against the Hindu faith and his deliberate attempt to alienate the victim from her Hindu identity, this case has been included in the Hindu hate tracker.
