Saifuddin rapes and impregnates Hindu woman in Bahrain, forcefully converts her to Islam, harasses her for dowry
Case Summary
A Hindu woman of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh met Saifuddin of Karnataka while she was employed for almost seven years in Bahrain. As they grew close, the Muslim man raped her one day, following which she lodged a police complaint. The victim became five months pregnant as a result of the rape. Saifuddin and his family members started harassing her to withdraw the complaint. They also started pressurising her to convert to Islam. On February 13, 2024, the victim woman was forced to marry Saifuddin according to Muslim law. In due course, Saifuddin tricked her into visiting Mumbai for a medical consultation where the doctors secretly aborted her five-month-old foetus. She was then brought to the culprit’s house in Karnataka’s Beedar where she was subjected to physical and psychological abuse by his elder brother, fiancee Monika, and other family members. The police registered a case for dowry-related harassment against the offenders, including Saifuddin, who is still missing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This particular case has been classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under the core category of 'Hate crime against woman in a relationship' because there is a distinct component in this case, which essentially involves tricking a Hindu woman into a relationship and then forcing her to convert to Islam and performing Nikah against her wish. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing.
