Ahtasam and Sahil behind bars for entrapping and raping two Hindu minor sisters in Dehradun

Case Summary
On May 13, 2024, in Uttarakhand's Dehradun, the Rajpur Police arrested two accused Ahtasam and Sahil on charges of raping two minor sisters. After interrogation, the police produced them before the court and sent them behind bars. These two sisters from the Chamoli district, aged 14 and 16, lost their parents a few years ago. Ahtasam (21) from Azad Nagar Colony started a romantic relationship with the younger sister and introduced his friend, Sahil (26) from Kandhla, Saharanpur, to the elder sister, who also got entrapped. On May 12, the sisters went out for some work and met with them. The accused took the minors to Sahastradhara, where they booked a room at the Heritage Hotel and stayed overnight. Here, the minor girls were raped by the Muslim boys. When the sisters did not return home after a long time, their family members became concerned and reported their disappearance to the police. A police team was promptly formed to arrest the accused and rescue the minor sisters. The sisters stated that the accused raped them following which they were booked under Section 376 and the POCSO Act.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Since the victim in this case is a minor, there is a strong suspicion of grooming involved. Grooming is a phenomenon where Muslim men specifically target minor non-Muslim girls for sexual exploitation, abuse and rape. In this case, the girl was in a consensual relationship with the Muslim perpetrator, however, a major aspect of grooming is also brainwashing minors to be in such relationships, therefore, even in such cases, the aspect of grooming cannot be discounted.
