Case Summary

During the Ganesh festival celebrations in Mochipura, Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, a stone was thrown at a Ganesh idol, sparking significant protests on the night of September 7, 2024. Over 500 Hindus gathered outside the Station Road police station, chanting slogans against the stone-throwing incident. Initially, police attempted to de-escalate the situation and later registered an FIR against unknown individuals. The FIR states that the incident occurred around 8:30 PM while members of a Puja committee were transporting the Ganesh idol from Khetalpur to Mehndikui Balaji, accompanied by women and children. City SP Abhinav Barange mentioned that some participants said they were also targeted with stones. As the police investigated the site, more stones were thrown, leading to a clash where a police vehicle's glass was broken. In response, law enforcement used mild force to disperse the crowd, and additional police forces were deployed to maintain order. The police said about the incident that the accusation of stone pelting was primarily made by a transgender called Kajal. Two others had made the accusations. However, during the investigation, they found no evidence of stone pelting and that the version of the three was inconsistent. After the stone pelting on the police while they investigated the scene, allegedly by protesting Hindus, the police book several Hindus.

Why it is Hate Crime ?
