2 Muslim men held in police encounter while attempting to slaughter a calf
Case Summary
On September 3, 2024, an encounter occurred between the police and two brothers, Mahfooz and Mahmood, in Fatehpur district, Uttar Pradesh. The police had received a tip-off about an imminent cow slaughter behind a kiln in the Sultanpur Ghosh police station area. When officers arrived, they saw that the calf was tied to a tree and the accused were preparing to slaughter it. The brothers then opened fire on the police, narrowly missing a policeman. In retaliation, the police fired back, injuring both brothers in the legs. The police arrested them and recovered pistols, bullets, sharp weapons, and a live cow. The brothers were admitted to the hospital, and charges under the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, and Cow Slaughter Act have been filed.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. Those who work towards the protection of the cow are also often attacked brutally by Muslim radicals. In all cases of cow slaughter and/or attack against those who work towards the protection of the cow, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
