Dilshad and Arbaaz arrested for smuggling 32 kg of beef and opening fire on the police; accomplices Salman and Gudnu flee
Case Summary
In Ambedkar Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, police arrested two Muslim men, Dilshad Beg and Arbaaz, for cow slaughter after recovering over 32 kg of beef during a raid. The incident occurred on August 31, 2024, when Sub Inspector Harinarayan and his team were patrolling and received a tip-off about four individuals on motorcycles suspected of carrying cow meat and illegal weapons. Upon being signalled to stop, the suspects opened fire on the police. During the confrontation, Constable Ritesh apprehended two attackers, while the other two accomplices, Salman and Gudnu, managed to escape. The police recovered a gun, cartridges, an iron axe, a motorcycle, and a mobile phone from the scene. Both arrested men confessed to slaughtering cows for profit and named their fleeing associates. They were charged under the Cow Slaughter Act, the Arms Act, and Section 109 of the Indian Penal Code.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. Those who work towards the protection of the cow are also often attacked brutally by Muslim radicals. In all cases of cow slaughter, smuggling and/or attacks against those who work towards the protection of the cow, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
