Adil poses as Hindu, wears a Kalava to trap Hindu girl; forces her to convert to Islam and follow Islamic practices after his identity is revealed
Case Summary
A case came to light when a girl from Delhi reported a Muslim man, Adil, of deceiving her by posing as a Hindu named Ayush. The victim said that Adil met her wearing a sacred thread (Kalava) and introduced himself as Ayush. He trapped her in a relationship, during which she became pregnant. When she discovered his real identity as Adil, she objected, but Adil began physically assaulting her, cutting the Kalava tied on his hand. He then forced her to convert to Islam, made her read the Kalma, and observe fasts. Additionally, he pressured her to have an abortion. The victim stated that Adil took her to his house in Budhana's Mohalla Kaziwada, where he further coerced her into religious conversion and continued exploiting her. She eventually sought help and approached the women’s police station, where she reported her ordeal to the Station Officer (SO). The Rashtriya Hindu Shakti Sangathan also got involved, and its delegation informed Superintendent of Police (Rural) Aditya Bansal about the case. The victim lodged a formal complaint against Adil for deceiving her, converting her religion, and exploiting her physically and emotionally.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the hate tracker under the prime category- Hate crimes against women in relationships and sexual crimes. Under this two sub-categories have been chosen. The first is- Man pretends to be Hindu- under which two tertiary categories chosen are- Name changed and Wears symbols of Hinduism. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The second sub-category relevant here is- Forced conversion before marriage- under which one tertiary category has also been chosen, which is 'Forced to follow non-Hindu religious practices'. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. A Muslim youth posing as a Hindu, wearing a kalava (a sacred thread worn by Hindus), and establishing a sexual relationship with a Hindu woman under false pretences is a clear case of religious hate. In Hinduism, the Kalava holds deep religious, cultural, and spiritual significance. It symbolizes protection, blessings, unity, and commitment to spiritual and ethical principles. Its use across various rituals and ceremonies underscores its importance in the Hindu way of life. By exploiting religious symbols and rituals sacred to Hindus, the Muslim accused not only betrayed the woman's trust but also showed a profound disrespect for her faith. Further, the Hindu victim's identity was systematically stripped away as she was forced to convert to Islam and follow Islamic practices, such as reading the Kalma and observing fasts. These actions, which were enforced against her will, signify a deliberate effort to force her to abandon her Hindu identity and adopt a different religious practice under duress. This case qualifies as a religiously motivated hate crime because it involves the deliberate targeting of a Hindu woman’s religious identity through deception, followed by abuse once the truth is revealed. The initial act of pretending to be Hindu, followed by forced conversion, is a calculated assault on the woman's religious faith. The subsequent torture underscores the deep-seated religious hatred, as it serves to punish and subjugate the woman for her faith, making this a clear instance of religiously motivated violence and bigotry.
