Adil poses as Aman on Instagram to lure Hindu woman, holds her captive and rapes her with his brothers, forces conversion, threatens to slaughter her "like an animal"

Case Summary
A young Hindu woman from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, accused a man named Adil from Alipur, of trapping her in a romantic relationship under a false identity, coercing her into religious conversion, and subjecting her to sustained sexual abuse. The case came to light after the victim filed a complaint with the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Baghpat. The victim, a resident of a village in the Chandinagar area, said she initially connected with Adil through Instagram, where he used the alias "Aman." Over time, Adil, under his fake Hindu identity, built a relationship with the woman and proposed marriage. Believing his promises, she agreed to meet him on August 5, 2023, at his village home in Alipur Dhakka More, Amroha. Upon reaching his home, she discovered his real name was Adil, and she had been deceived. The victim woman was held captive for almost a year. During this time, she was subjected to repeated sexual assault by Adil, who kept her in isolation. Further, Adil’s two brothers were also involved in sexually harassing her. Adil coerced her into converting to Islam, holding her captive along with his family. During her captivity, she was repeatedly assaulted, threatened with weapons, and warned that if she revealed his true identity or the forced conversion to anyone, she would be slaughtered "like an animal." The woman also revealed that Adil used a pistol and a knife to intimidate her into silence. After twenty days of captivity, the victim managed to escape and initially reported the incident at the Saidnagali police station in Amroha. After no immediate action was taken, the victim approached the SP’s office on August 28, 2024, and also uploaded a video on social media.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This particular case has been classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under two prime categories. The first is- Hate crimes against women in relationships and sexual crimes. Under this, two sub-categories have been selected as per case details. The first is- Man pretends to be Hindu. Within this two tertiary categories, namely 'Name changed' and 'Raped after Hindu woman finds out real identity' have also been chosen. Man pretends to be Hindu- When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. Here, the perpetrator's deliberate deception by assuming a false identity as a Hindu man reflects a calculated attempt to exploit the girl's religious background. By posing as someone who shares her faith, he manipulated her trust and violated her ability to make informed decisions about her relationships. This deception is not just a personal betrayal but a targeted attack on her religious identity, as the girl's trust was built on the belief that she was interacting with someone from her own religious community. Second, the element of forced religious conversion further marks this as a hate crime, as the perpetrator sought to impose his religion on the victim, using threats and violence to break her will. She was held in captivity where she was sexually assaulted by the accused and his brothers. Further, the accused threatened her with weapons and warned to slaughter her if she revealed his true identity or the forced conversion to anyone, adding an additional layer of psychological manipulation to coerce her into converting to Islam. The intent to strip her of her religious identity through force and deception shows religious animosity, making this a hate crime. It highlights a broader pattern where vulnerable individuals are targeted based on their religion, with the aim of coercing them into abandoning their faith through intimidation and violence. As such, this case qualifies as a religiously motivated hate crime, driven by a disregard for the victim's faith and a desire to impose a different religious identity upon her.
