Muslim cleric sexually harasses Hindu woman, issues threats to destroy her family if she rejects his advances

Case Summary
In the Bhitauti police station area of Maharajganj district, on August 19, 2024, a Hindu woman filed a police complaint against Maulvi Alamgir, for sexual harassment and making threats against her and her family. The victim, married for six years and the mother of two children, had sought Alamgir's help after being advised to visit him for exorcism as her health had deteriorated. The Maulvi, residing in the local mosque, began talking to her. However, after a few days, the Maulvi started making inappropriate and dirty remarks towards her. Alarmed, the woman confided in her husband and her in-laws. Her husband confronted the Maulvi at the mosque, warning him to stop, but the Maulvi dismissed the confrontation, abusing her husband and refusing to change his behaviour. Alamgir escalated the situation by making video calls, demanding obscene acts from the woman. When she refused, he began issuing threats to destroy her and her entire family. Fearing for her safety and that of her family, the woman approached the police. An FIR was lodged against Maulvi Alamgir under sections 78, 351(2), and 352 of the Indian Penal Code (BNS). The police initiated legal action.
