Illegal cow slaughter racket busted, Muslim mob attacks cops
Case Summary
Maharashtra Police busted an illegal cow slaughter racket in Tarapur, Palghar district. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a cattle shed run by Mohammed Joher Sheikh near an Urdu school. The operation uncovered illegal cow slaughter, a violation of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act 2015, which prohibits the slaughter of bulls, bullocks, and calves. The accused, including Ansari Damanwala and his sons Atique and Abdul Hamid Ansari, were involved in smuggling beef from illegal traders to Sheikh’s slaughterhouse. Other accomplices included Sheikh's wife Rubina, Suleiman Zubair, Faizal, and Khalid. When police arrived at the scene, they found cow meat being cut with sharp knives. As they attempted to intervene, the accused violently resisted. Inspector Ramesh Hadal described in the FIR how Ansari Damanwala and his sons attacked him and other officers with knives. Inspector Hadal suffered injuries, and Sub Inspector Jadhav was attacked on his knee during the clash. Despite the resistance, police managed to apprehend the suspects and seize cows, other cattle, and evidence of slaughtering activities. The accused were charged under multiple sections of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and the Indian Penal Code. Additional charges were filed under the Arms Act for possessing dangerous weapons.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. Those who work towards the protection of the cow are also often attacked brutally by Muslim radicals. In all cases of cow slaughter and/or attack against those who work towards the protection of the cow, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
