Pakistan: Minor Hindu girl abducted and raped in Sindh, body found dumped in a farm
Case Summary
In an incident in Pakistan's Sindh province, a 16-year-old Hindu girl named Nageena Chandio was abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered by three unidentified men. Her body was discovered on a farm near Mehar town, sparking outrage and sorrow. The non-profit organization Voice of Pakistan Minority shared a video showing her grieving family and criticized the lack of safety for girls and minorities in Pakistan. Nageena's father, Roshan Chandio, had reported her missing on January 19, 2022. She had been alone at home when she disappeared. Her strangulated body, showing signs of severe torture, was found abandoned near Sindhi Buttira and later identified at Mehar Hospital. Injuries from sharp objects were evident on her legs, arms, and back, and rope marks indicated she had been tied up. Despite filing a case, Roshan Chandio expressed frustration over the lack of arrests. The police registered a murder FIR against three unknown suspects and launched an investigation led by a five-member team from Dadu Police. The team, headed by DSP Mohammad Younis Rodhanani, recorded statements from the family and local residents and gathered evidence from the crime scene. The investigation continued as the community demanded justice for Nageena.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a minor Hindu was abducted raped, tortured and discarded in Muslim majority Pakistan. In Pakistan, Hindu minorities often come under severe attack owing to their religious identity. In such Muslim majority countries, Hindus are considered 'Kafirs' and the majority population holds religious animosity towards the Hindus. In several cases, Hindu girls, including children, are abducted, raped and converted to Islam by force. There is a serious suspicion that in this case as well, the Hindu girl was targeted owing to her religious identity. Further, the lack of police action also points towards religious animosity. There are several Human Rights Organisations from Pakistan that have attested to the administration - judiciary and police - not taking action when minorities come under attack by Islamists. However, since officially the perpetrator identity is unknown, as is the religious motivation, this case is being categorised as undecided. If more information emerges, it will be added to the hate crime database.
