Hslut4Mstud: Hindu women sexually objectified, targeted with pornographic content on Reddit, Twitter and Tumblr
Case Summary
On January 24, 2022, Ankita, a BJP worker from West Bengal, tweeted about her photograph being misused on social media. She shared a screenshot from a Reddit group called "I_AM_Bengaalan" where her image was edited and posted with derogatory comments by a user named Radha Sheikh. Ankita expressed fear and requested the National Commission for Women, its Chairperson Rekha Sharma, and the Kolkata Police to intervene. The user who posted the image deleted the post and their profile after Ankita's tweet went viral. Ankita learned about the misuse of her photo through a Twitter DM and planned to file a legal complaint. An investigation of the Reddit group resulted in finding it filled with objectionable posts targeting Hindu women. The group's description indicated a focus on objectifying Hindu women in the context of Muslim men. Multiple posts featured images of Hindu women, likely taken from social media, accompanied by vile captions. For instance, one post depicted a woman with a caption involving sexual violence against her mother. Another post involved a photograph of a Hindu girl with a disturbing caption referencing her absence after an encounter with a Muslim man. The sexual objectification of Hindu women by Muslim men continued as a recurring theme, with similar posts also appearing on Twitter and Tumblr.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Doxxing is the act of making available publicly personal, identifiable information of an individual with the intention of compromising their safety, security and privacy. When doxing is done with religious animosity forming the basis of the intention, it often involves severe consequences like loss of employment, physical harm, physical threat, harassment and/or discrimination for the victim’s religious beliefs. Such doxxing also involves projecting the religious beliefs, affiliations, and rituals of the victim, specifically a Hindu, in a manner that can lead to loss of employment, physical harm, physical threat, harassment and/or discrimination. Apart from doxxing, harassment would also include misrepresentation of an individual's views and religious beliefs that would invite abuse, loss of employment, physical harm, physical threat, harassment and/or discrimination owing to religious hate and animosity. There have been several such instances where religious animosity by one section has led to the doxxing and harassment of Hindus. For example, when a Hindu who worked in the UAE commented on the historical persecution of Hindus at the hands of Muslim invaders, his information was leaked online leading to loss of employment, physical harm, physical threat, harassment and/or discrimination. In another case, a Hindu man’s information was leaked online, leading to violent attacks, after he responded with an emoji to a post about Tipu Sultan, the Islamic tyrant who persecuted Hindus. Such cases are born out of intrinsic religious animosity towards Hindus and therefore, would be considered religiously motivated hate speech. In this case, the targeted harassment of Hindu women was sexual in nature. The Muslims, out of religious animosity towards Hindus, specifically targeted women based on their religious identity. They profiled women based on their religion and Hindu woman were specifically doxxed and shown in disparaging ways - induing in intercourse and being raped specifically by Muslim men. This only campaign doxxed Hindu women, revealed their identities without their consent and also showed them in pornographic, disparaging ways to explicitly show Hindus being humiliated by Muslims. Since this was born out of not only religious animosity against Hindus but also a sense of Islamic supremacy, where non-Muslims are legitimate "possessions" who can be sexually subjugated, it is being categorised as a religiously motivated hate crime.
