Altaf befriends Hindu girl on Instagram, rapes her and dumps unconscious body; his accomplices including Zubaira helped kidnap her, offered spiked drink

Case Summary
On August 23, 2024, in Karkala town, Udupi district of Karnataka, the police arrested a man named Altaf for the abduction and rape of a 21-year-old Hindu woman. Altaf befriended the victim three months prior using Instagram. After having gained her trust, he asked the woman to meet him in person. The accused and his three aides kidnapped the victim and gave her a spiked drink. One of the accomplices, identified as Zubaira, supplied the beer bottles and drinks. Altaf raped her as she lay unconscious. After committing the crime, Altaf and his accomplices dumped the unconscious Hindu woman near her home. Locals found her and rushed her to Taluk government hospital, and she was later transferred to a private hospital in Manipal. Following public outrage, the police arrested Altaf and Zubaira, while two other suspects remain at large. SP (Udupi) Arun Kumar confirmed that a case was registered, and legal procedures are being followed. The police also confiscated two vehicles used by the accused during the crime.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
There are several cases where Muslim perpetrators befriend and trap Hindu women using social media. In those cases, the Muslim perpetrator misrepresents his identity as a Hindu. In some cases, it was observed that even when the identity was not concealed, the Muslim perpetrator would wear Hindu symbols to pretend to be tolerant and accepting of the Hindu faith. After the entrapment, the woman was either raped, assaulted and/or forced to convert. In this case, however, there is no indication that any of those religious elements existed. Because of that, this case is being categorised as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
