Maulvi Nasru molests woman from Jatav community under the pretext of performing exorcism

Case Summary
In the Jahangirabad police station area of Bulandshahr district on August 17, 2024, a man from the Jatav community filed a complaint with the police, stating that his married daughter, who had been frequently ill, was sexually assaulted by a Maulvi named Nasru. The daughter had come to her maternal home for Rakshabandhan and, on someone's advice, the father sought the Maulvi's help for exorcism. Around 2 PM, when the victim's father was not home, Maulvi Nasru arrived at their house. Under the pretext of performing a ritual, he began inappropriately touching the victim, including pressing her breasts, and attempted to forcefully take her to a room. The victim's aunt arrived just in time, and upon hearing the commotion, the victim cried out for help. Neighbours gathered and caught the Maulvi as he tried to flee, handing him over to the police. The victim's father demanded strict action against Maulvi Nasru in his complaint. The police arrested the Maulvi and took action against him under the SC/ST Act, along with Section 75 of the BNSS (Indian Civil Security Code).
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong suspicion that the Muslim cleric assaulted and sexually attacked the woman in question because of her Hindu identity. It is often seen that those performing Islamic rituals have attacked victims because of their intrinsic animosity towards the Hindu faith. However, since there is no indication, including a statement by the victim or her family, that she was attacked owing to her religious identity, this case is being categorised as undecided.
